Butter London Just Revealed Its 2019 Pantone Color of the Year Makeup Collection

If there’s one thing I look forward to even more than the annual December announcement of what Pantone’s Color of the Year will be, it’s seeing what Butter London will do with the chosen shade. Pantone’s official beauty partner for several years, the brand has consistently launched fun collections that interpret each year’s hero hue in lip colors, multipurpose cosmetic products, and of course, its fan-favorite nail polish. And this year’s color of the year, Living Coral, has made for one of the most wearable collaborations yet.

Called “a life-affirming coral hue that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge” by the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, Living Coral seems practically made for makeup. It’s a golden orange with a touch of pink — the kind of color that looks incredible on all skin tones (something we learned when Becca Cosmetics launched the Champagne Pop highlighter with Jaclyn Hill). And while coral is often a color associated with summery beauty looks, Butter London’s six-piece collection is begging to be worn as soon as it launches over the course of December and January.

The first products that will be available are three Living Coral Mini Size Nail Lacquers ($12 each). “They are all gorgeous finishes, but my personal favorite is the Patent Shine 10X Crème Finish. This formula glides on like butter and the finished result is a beautiful ‘just polished’ shine,” Julie Campbell, general manager of Butter London and VP of marketing for Astral Brands, tells Allure. That said, she’s also really excited about Peel-Off Glitter version. “Our Peel-Off Glitters are a no-fuss, easy-glide [nail polish] formula that comes off without scrubbing off little specs of glitter with harsh chemicals.” The third, Crushed Diamonds Patent Shine 10X, is where the two others meet in the middle, with a traditionally-removed eight-free formula and shimmering finish.

Come January, Butter London will introduce not only a three-piece set with all three of Mini Size Nail Lacquers ($22) but also two Living Coral makeup items. Living Coral Plush Rush Lip Gloss ($20) is a citrus-scented, plumping formula with a high-shine finish that can be built up from sheer to almost opaque. And although Living Coral Plush Rush Blush Stick ($24) is technically a cream blush for your cheeks, it’s just begging to be swiped across your lids and lips as well.

Because of my job, I was told Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year five days before it was announced to the general public — and keeping the secret damn near killed me. I can only imagine how challenging it was for the Butter London team, which had the confidential information six months ago. “This is indeed one of the best-kept secrets of the year and we take the secret very, very seriously! Everyone who touches the project is sworn to secrecy,” Campbell tells Allure. “The minute we know the color all wheels are put quickly in motion to concept, create, and complete the finished collection.”

And it’s clear that Butter London made the most of that six months. The resulting collection is destined to become a favorite, along with popular previous Color of the Year collaborations like last year’s Ultra Violet and 2015’s Marsala. “We were ecstatic when the Living Coral shade was revealed to us as we knew we would be part of a global trend and memorable makeup moment,” Campbell says of why Living Coral is just as worthy of beauty buzz. “Coral hues look gorgeous on absolutely everyone. It’s a shade that you, your sister, your mom, and your best friend can all wear.”
